The purpose of the Department Crew Leader position is to help manage and coordinate all daily activities in the crush, refinery, and/or biodiesel plant. The crew leader is responsible for assisting with the production areas to achieve the plant’s operational expectations and goals.  Crew leader will assist departments with EHS activities, operations training, maintenance scheduling, inventory management and logistics, housekeeping oversite, capital projects coordination, and contractor management along with troubleshooting operational and safety opportunities. They will ensure the equipment is in good repair and fully operational, appropriate work orders are assigned, and schedule maintenance work priorities with the maintenance team.

A Typical Work Day May Include:

  • Assist in specific EHS tasks (addressing necessary/assigned housekeeping, attend safety/HOP committee meetings, coordinate safety device testing, procedure updates, training, and onboarding initiatives, lead High Risk Task of the Day HRTD identification and observation in the field, coaching PJHA effectiveness, etc.)
  • Responsible for coordination of all applicable daily activities between production, maintenance, and contractors. Partner with operators on all KPI related troubleshooting tasks. i.e., equipment, processes, safety, boiler, utilities, logistics
  • Support the Production Supervisor(s) by better understanding the needs of operators, address obstacles and debottlenecking processes that are not working as designed.
  • Help create and reinforce Operator Standard Work. Work closely with the Knowledge Management Operator (KMO), experienced operators and supervisor team to focus on standardizing operations. The goal is to standardize all work across different shifts, so all tasks are completed according to the SOPs and/or One Point Lessons.
  • Assist in Process Confirmation tasks – work with supervisors and engineers
  • Develop daily and weekly work assignments for all operators, especially Utility Operators, Floating Operators, and Relief Operators not covering a shift.  Assign daily work and follow-up to make sure all operators and support staff are being fully utilized.
  • Work extended shifts to support the facility which may require coming in early before normal shift and staying over later than normal shift.  Short notice may be given when coming in early or staying over late.  Some work may be scheduled on weekends.  Night and 2nd shift support may be required occasionally.
  • Be part of the supervisor on-call rotation for weekday nights and/or weekends. Provide operator performance feedback to the department supervisors.  Provide feedback for operator PMPs.  
  • Crew Leaders may need to cover for absent supervisors and open supervisor positions. Crew leader will address poor performance issues with their crew under the guidance of the management. Bad behaviors, poor attendance, unsafe activities, unsafe performance…They may participate in performance reviews.
  • Assist other department plant personnel as needed and perform other duties as requested by management.
  • Key operations and in-the-plant safety trainer for new operators, mechanics, and supervisors

What You will need:

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Ability to understand and communicate in English (verbal/written)
  • Ability to perform physical job duties which may include bending, lifting up to 50lbs, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and twisting, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to work in varied indoor and outdoor conditions which may include heat, cold, dust, loud noise, etc., with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including a respirator
  • Ability to work in elevated areas (4 feet and above)
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to work overtime including weekends, holidays, or different shifts with advance notice


What Will Put You Ahead:

  • High school diploma/GED or a minimum of two years equivalent work experience
  • Experience in production and/or similar military environment
  • Experience with continuous flow process environments, such as crush, refinery, or biodiesel operations
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and/or automated computer systems, such as Human Machine Interface (HMI)
  • Direct experience operating an oilseeds processing plant or biodiesel plant
