This position is in Cargill’s protein and salt business, where we provide wholesome, high-quality food products to a wide range of customers, from foodservice operators and grocery stores to manufacturers and exporters.

Job Purpose and Impact

The Senior Food Scientist will lead the exploration, development, and implementation of new and existing retail-ready protein products for multiple customers across our Calgary, AB; Chambly, QC; and Guelph, ON case-ready facilities. In this role, you will provide technical expertise to enhance current product offerings and drive innovation in support of product line expansion and customer growth.You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and R&D partners to identify and implement technical solutions aligned with business objectives.

**This is a facility-based position and can be located at one of our Canadian Case Ready facilities in Calgary, AB; Chambly, QC; or Guelph, ON**.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify opportunities for product growth and new product development; adapt plans to capitalize on emerging trends and market demands.
  • Lead product qualification at production sites, ensuring compliance with quality standards and cost expectations.
  • Stay up to date with scientific literature and advancements in analytical methodologies.
  • Work independently to manage daily responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Provide technical leadership in product and process development, quality systems, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support the development and execution of innovation roadmaps and market plans aligned with overall business strategy.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including business, marketing, insights, sales, operations, food safety, quality, and regulatory functions.
  • Partner with research and commercial brand teams to design and implement short- and long-term testing programs for experimental and commercial products and hybrids.
  • Collaborate closely with sales, business management, and marketing to identify customer needs and translate them into new product development opportunities.
  • Independently resolve complex issues, escalating only the most critical matters to appropriate personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma/Certificate or bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of four years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in product development within a manufacturing environment
  • Proven success working in a matrixed organizational structure
  • Ability to travel within Canada up to 30% for business purposes
  • Must be legally entitled to work for Cargill in Canada

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or other advanced post-secondary education
  • Bilingual in English and French (fluency required)
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to align technical solutions with business goals and customer needs
  • Experience in meat product development, sensory evaluation, and food safety
  • Proficiency in data collection and statistical analysis
  • Experience with retail meat products
