Job Purpose and Impact

The Patent Scientist will be a key contributor to protect technical innovations for Intellectual Property (IP). You’ll provide support to create and develop dedicated and skilled global resources to decrease lag in moving from innovation to strategic patent fillings, increase the quality and scope of the company's intellectual property filings and reduce costs through the use of active portfolio management. In this role, you will provide support to essential partners in intellectual property creation and patent processes for a diverse set of projects in food and bio industrial products

Key Accountabilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate discussions for invention identification, generation of invention disclosures and support a purposeful invention disclosures funnel including invention mining.
  • Collaborate with essential scientist partners and project leaders and apply in depth knowledge to provide support for strategic, efficient and timely patent review cycles.
  • Contribute to strong communication between scientists and legal support teams.
  • Provide support to drive the rigor of inventions and experimental designs to improve the scope of claims globally.
  • Coordinate discussions with legal for trade secrets versus patent for innovations, provide support to access cited prior art coming out of patent office responses, compliance with geographical duty of disclosure requirements and identify which global patent category support which product category.
  • Maintain a strong lab presence, apply desired methodology and support timely and relevant training on global intellectual property and patent considerations in conjunction with the law department.
  • Collaborate with the law department to conduct searches related to patentability and freedom to operate.
  • Apply a technical expertise to assist in understanding of prior art, state of field and translation between the organization drafts and the broader field.
  • Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of four years of related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with assessing and handling risk in collaboration with the legal team
  • Experience with invention identification, patent filing strategy development, and patent portfolio management 
  • Master's degree, doctoral degree, or equivalent experience in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with the R&D development process
  • Experience with patent searching and patent landscape analytics 

Compensation Information

The expected salary for this position is $110,000-$150,000. Compensation varies depending on a wide array of factors including but not limited to the specific location, certifications, education, and level of experience. The disclosed range estimate may be adjusted for any applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. This position is eligible for a discretionary incentive award. The incentive award amount is dependent upon company performance and your personal performance.
