Job Purpose and Impact

The Road and Rail Freight Supplier Manager will be responsible for managing and optimising both road and rail freight operations. This role involves overseeing the sourcing, contracting and performance management of the service providers through well-defined KPI’s and structured Supplier Management programs. 

The role will also ensure efficient, effective, compliant and cost competitiveness across all road and rail freight and ensure that our owned assets are maintained / inspected and ready for operations at any given time.

Key Accountabilities

  • Negotiate and manage road and rail freight contracts, ensuring compliance with company policies, Chain of Responsibility (CoR) regulations, and industry standards.
  • Lead freight tender processes, including distribution, evaluation, and selection, to secure competitive and strategic transport solutions.
  • Develop and maintain freight strategies in collaboration with internal stakeholders, aligning with short-, medium-, and long-term business goals.
  • Oversee asset inspection and maintenance, ensuring service providers are certified and compliant with regulatory and manufacturer standards.
  • Monitor and report on freight performance, using analytics to drive cost-efficiency, optimise utilisation, and benchmark against industry standards.
  • Foster strong supplier relationships, providing market insights, forecasts, and collaborating on continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage freight operations administration, including quoting, invoicing, contract management, and accurate data entry into systems like JD Edwards (JDE).
  • Ensure service provider compliance with safety, maintenance, and performance expectations through structured supplier management programs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in freight sourcing or logistics
  • Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in freight sourcing or logistics within the grains industry
  • Analyse basic transportation operations practices to resolve process and cost improvement opportunities.
  • Apply a basic understanding of transportation and logistics practices and procedures to assist in negotiating freight prices and contract terms for customers.
