Mechanical Engineer

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the engineering and design of assigned mechanical projects within the project department at Cargill Gouda. The projects range from “greenfield” to “brownfield,” and execution may take place during or outside of plant shutdowns. Projects can be single-discipline or multidisciplinary, involving engineering disciplines such as Electrical, Instrumentation, Civil, Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Process Safety.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you are involved in all phases of a project—from initiation to completion. You are responsible for developing the mechanical design based on the internal client's requirements by creating drawings and specifications and, if necessary, overseeing proper execution. Safety is the top priority! To achieve this, efficient collaboration and clear communication between departments—Engineering, Production, Maintenance, Reliability, and Safety & Environment (EHS)—are essential.

Most projects are relatively small in scope, with investment values ranging from €2k to approximately €2.5M. These include modification, replacement, expansion, and compliance projects. Due to the nature of the work, the Mechanical Engineer must work pragmatically and effectively in consultation and collaboration with a small project team (if applicable).

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for engineering and design of capital projects
  • Translate project scope into design, including internal user requirements
  • Assess current field conditions to define the desired situation
  • Develop necessary modifications in accordance with applicable engineering standards
  • Inspect completed work in the field, including punch listing in consultation with contractors
  • Create preliminary design drawings/isometrics
  • Prepare cost estimates for projects
  • Initiate and participate in safety studies (e.g., Process Risk Assessment, Process Hazards Analysis)
  • Be involved during plant shutdowns for projects executed during this period
  • Foster optimal collaboration between departments by motivating people and promoting active cooperation
  • Follow Cargill EHS goals and encourage others to do the same

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3–5 years of experience, or a relevant vocational (MBO) degree with 5–10 years of experience—preferably within a continuous production environment
  • Experience in design and drawing creation
  • Experience with AutoCAD
  • Team player with strong communication skills
  • Experience with drawing isometrics (manual or digital)
  • Knowledge of PED/ISO, ARBO, NEN/DIN, safety, and company regulations
  • Good command of Dutch and English (spoken and written)
  • Positive energy and collaborative mindset
  • Experience with Project Management Tools (e.g., MS Project)
  • Experience with SAP is a plus
