Position Purpose


The Innovation & Technical Application Director is responsible for all North American Animal Nutrition and the stewardship of our Customer Tech portfolio.  This role aligns with our business priorities, leads the innovation approach and execution, influences senior leaders in the business, develops tomorrow’s leaders, interacts with strategic customers / partners, manages budget expectations and achieves financial expectations.  This role will lead an experienced team of Innovators and Tech Application managers to help shape and drive future value propositions for our customers through the delivery of new business models,  products services and solutions (NPSS).  The Innovation & Technical Application Director will be responsible for aligning our innovation capability to deliver the NPSS that is aligned to our business, species and category strategies.  The Innovation & Technical Application Director will also engage with Global SMT and other businesses to promote development and enhancement of new and/or existing innovation priorities and to leverage capabilities and offerings where appropriate.  The Innovation & Technical Application Director will inspire our employees to engage in innovation and will bring the outside-in through the establishment of external experts and capabilities that allow us to innovate faster and more efficiently.  The role will build a culture of collaboration and ability to work cross-functionally in order to anticipate and deliver differentiated solutions for our customers of today and tomorrow.

 

Principal Accountabilities

 

30%  Innovation approach … innovation approach and execution


Responsible for developing and executing innovation approach (e.g. ideation sessions, value creation assessment, customer focused development, governance, intellectual asset management, innovation plans, strategic partnerships, external networks and capabilities)

Responsible for building a strong customer focus into the innovation approach through collaboration with SMT and Commercial


30% Innovation pipeline ... innovation for new products, services and solutions


Responsible for the Animal Nutrition North America innovation pipeline (e.g. valuation, alignment to business priorities, balance of H1/H2/H3, coordinated deployment of new offerings and capabilities)

Advance projects within the innovation pipeline to ensure delivery on-time and on-target to key performance indicators

Collaborate with SMT colleagues and commercial teams to prioritize and remain agile and ahead of market volatility and customer preferences


25% People first … lead innovation talent development


Responsible to develop diverse innovation talent (e.g. identify, recruit, develop and retain).

Responsible for establishing how innovation fits and collaborates with SMT and commercial teams to achieve a high performing innovation system

Link with Global SMT to execute swiftly with high-performance across various channels and stakeholders


15% Business execution/resources … achieve Animal Nutrition North America business results

 

•Align with priorities of senior leaders (Animal Nutrition, Global CPN SMT, business, commercial, functional leaders), allocate resources, and deliver timely results

•Responsible for innovation budget, performance metrics, and effectiveness with stakeholders and customers

•Support Animal Nutrition North America to become known as an innovation leader through thought leadership


Essential Functions/Requirements

Up to 40% travel requirements

 

Location: The preferred location for this position is Wayzata, MN although U.S. based remote options will be considered. 


Required Qualifications

•Minimum of a Master's or MBA

•10+ years of R&D, Marketing, and/or Innovation experience (leading a direct team for a minimum of 4 years) 

•Customer facing experience

•Demonstrated ability to create and manage complex development projects to achieve business success.

•Demonstrated ability to network and influence cross functionally while having a presence with customers backed by agility and courage.

•Demonstrated ability to develop and coach others while leading an engaged team. 

•Student of marketing (i.e. 9 Day Cargill Marketing Academy Training or training in marketing concepts/approaches).

•Demonstrated ability to manage financial elements of the business, including budgets, product margins, return on investment and profitability analysis.

•Strong communications skills both verbal and written

Preferred Qualifications

•PhD or DVM

•Innovation or R&D experience

•Process improvement experience

•International or global experience

•Experience working or leading people in a matrixed operating model

•Experience working in the Agriculture space
