Job Purpose and Impact

The Fermentation Engineer will conduct research on fermentation and other biotechnology-related areas with a focus on development of new and optimization of existing industrial bioprocesses. In this role, you will work on a global multidisciplinary team to develop, plan and execute fermentation experimental designs at lab, pilot and plant scales, and effectively communicate results to stakeholders in R&D, engineering, production and business. This position also provides the opportunity to collaborate on infrastructure development, unit operation design, automation, in-line monitoring and numerous other technologies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Create technical work plans for fermentation experiments at lab, pilot and plant scale individually or as part of a team, applying good scientific and project management practices.
  • Conduct fermentation experiments safely and effectively against the project goals with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data.
  • Compile, analyze and interpret various forms of lab, pilot and plant data from data historians to enable sound data-driven conclusions.
  • Support the upgrade of process control and automation systems (including programming of process control strategies) as well as integration of new data management and visualization hardware and software.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate experimental outcomes and well-reasoned recommendations for future work.
  • Collaborate with commercial fermentation facilities (engineers and operators) to support troubleshooting, identify new opportunities or evaluate and implement new technology oriented at process optimization.
  • Independently solve moderately complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in biochemical/bioscience engineering, biotechnology or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of fermentation principles relevant to bioprocess development, scale-up and optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with lab-scale fermentation equipment, microbial techniques as well as mathematical, statistical and quantification tools (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, Julia).
  • Good oral and written communication skills (English)
  • Demonstrated awareness of safety

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's or PhD degree in biochemical/bioscience engineering, biotechnology or a related field.
  • Knowledge and application of microbial physiology, physics, chemistry, and biochemical engineering.
  • Experience with pilot or plant scale fermentation and downstream processing equipment. Knowledge of fermentor and unit operation design, process control and automation.
  • Strong statistical foundation and numerical aptitude.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, mechanical aptitude and critical thinking.
