Job Purpose and Impact
The Senior Scientist will join a team engineering yeast and bacteria with novel capabilities for use across Cargill’s business units. The Senior Scientist will play a key role in developing and improving metabolic pathways for the production of food, feed and Bio-Industrial chemicals. This position is based in Minneapolis, MN Research and Development Center (Plymouth).
Key Accountabilities
- Use metabolic engineering approaches to design, build and test microbial strains to achieve project goals.
- Generation of new hypotheses and metabolic pathways by mining scientific literature and in-house data and models.
- Collaborating with researchers in strain engineering, analytical chemistry, bioinformatics, fermentation, and process development to achieve project milestones.
- Training, mentoring and supervising junior team members
- Authoring reports and presentations, strong communication skills
- Stay abreast of new technology being used in the field
- Monitor materials to determine that they are on target impact including toxic or non toxic properties, binding and efficacy.
- Manage associated software applications, modeling techniques and information systems to collect, store and analyze scientific data.
- Oversee research studies that assist in improving agricultural processes, or other purposes.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, genetics, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, microbiology or related field.
- Strong core competency in metabolic engineering and small-scale fermentation processes.
- Ability to design and analyze experiments generating diverse data streams (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, genomics) to guide metabolic pathway development
- Working knowledge of genetics, gene regulation, synthetic biology, and biochemistry
- Good troubleshooting skills to deal with technical problems
- Demonstrated experience generating high quality data, and managing to a timeline
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of related industry work experience: microbiological techniques and metabolic pathway development
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, biophysics
- Understanding of one or more of the following scientific domains: molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, biophysics
