Job Purpose and Impact

LOCATION: Manchester (M17 1PA)

Cargill’s Manchester plant is a production facility at the hub of the UK food, spirit, pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetics industries. The plant and offices are part of Cargill’s starches and sweeteners business which produces sweeteners, wheat protein and alcohol for customers in the confectionery, brewing, drink, dairy, farming and bakery sectors.

This is an excellent opportunity to be a member of the Manchester site leadership team, to ensure all activities on a complex manufacturing site are carried out to protect the environment, health and safety of all employees, customers, contractors, visitors and the general public by managing all site EHS activities. The position holder will make improvement plans, prioritize plant resources with other members of the site management team, ensuring thorough follow up on issues and ensure all stakeholders are informed. The position holder will also manage the onsite professional EHS team.

Key Accountabilities

•    Prepare long term strategic EHS plans for the site, to ensure continuous improvement and deployment of internal and external audit recommendations, best practices, corporate and legal requirements 
•    In the event of EHS incidents, collaborate closely with other departments to ensure investigation and close out actions are implemented in a timely manner 
•    Manage contacts with local authorities 
•    Make the sites EHS standards and guidelines practical, workable and suitable for the site ensuring alignment to local legal requirements 
•    Work closely with the site Training Coordinator to identify competency, knowledge gaps and required training 
•    Ensure clear and transparent communication both across the site to continuously increase EHS awareness and accountability of site personnel and vertically through the central European EHS organisation 
•    Manage the EHS systems ensuring trends are identified, root causes are isolated and corrected through prioritised action management
•    Work closely with other colleagues at both a UK and European EHS level to influence policy and participate in best practice sharing sessions 
•    Work as part of a UK wide collaborative EHS organisation that share best practices and develop common systems and processes 
•    Work closely with Food Safety Quality and Regulatory to ensure site standards are harmonised 
•    Accountable for the performance management, talent development, succession planning and engagement for a team of EHS professionals and manage the EHS budget

Qualifications

•    A degree in EHS/ Engineering or equivalent relevant academic qualification (e.g. Environmental Management) 
•    IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH Diploma 
•    Deep knowledge of EHS legislation, management systems such as process safety management, global audit systems, loss control prevention systems and hazard identification and risk assessment 
•    Experience of EHS within a process industry e.g. chemicals, petrochemicals, heavy pharmaceuticals or food/ingredients would be preferred but other industries will be considered 
•    Excellent influencing skills with the ability to clearly communicate objectives, provide feedback and get buy in at all levels, providing clear accountability for performance goals
•    A track record of developing, motivating and sustaining teams of EHS professionals and other colleagues 
•    A continuous improvement mindset with the ability to adapt to changing business needs and introduce new ways of thinking within a manufacturing environment 
•    Experience managing an EHS budget 
•    Manage conflicting priorities within tight deadlines
