Job Purpose and Impact
The Environmental Lawyer will manage a large variety and volume of legal matters and projects while working collaboratively with a team to implement the law group's objectives and business objectives. In this role, you will engage with global law team members and leaders primarily supporting Cargill’s businesses in North America (300+ processing, manufacturing, and storage facilities) while building strong connections with Cargill’s government relations, EHS, sustainability, operations, and business stakeholders. In addition to your legal expertise, you will apply business, organizational, and industry knowledge to support the law team and business. This role is part of Cargill’s global environmental legal team, comprised of lawyers and paralegals, and is focused on substantive matters in North America and Cargill’s global, cross-business policies and strategies. We work collaboratively while also providing you the autonomy to manage environmental matters directly with your key stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
- Drive desired legal outcomes on matters in a collaborative team environment to achieve business objectives and bring positive impact for Cargill.
- Serve as a trusted partner and counsel to the business to proactively assess opportunities against associated risks, address business and customer needs and challenges, solve unique and complex problems, and develop innovative solutions with the law team and business using new approaches and perspectives.
- Support the success of the law team and business, counseling across a broad range of legal and business environmental issues, proactively addressing legal risk and legal needs with the team and developing a deep understanding of Cargill, including its risk tolerance and goals.
- Apply legal, risk management, and advocacy skills to a wide range of matters, including compliance counseling, permitting, real estate, M&A, regulatory and legislative advocacy, facility expansions, and new-builds.
- Represent Cargill in environmental enforcement actions, citizen suits, and other litigation while managing outside counsel and consultants.
- Manage external consultants and legal advisors.
- Build and maintain relationships with external networks to ensure awareness of industry and policy developments and develop and deepen relevant subject matter expertise.
- Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative work environment where diversity and equity are valued.
- Provide thought leadership in the environmental legal field and work with limited direction, using additional research and interpretation to identify issues or problems.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
- Juris doctor and eligibility to practice law within current jurisdiction
- Experience managing stakeholder priorities and needs in a client facing capacity
- At least 3 years’ experience advising clients (government, private, or in-house clients) on environmental legal issues, especially the CAA, CWA, SDWA, CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA, and state equivalents
- At least 3 years’ experience working for a state or federal government agency, law firm or as an in-house counsel, including conducting legal review of complex issues and using legal analysis to provide solutions in a clear manner
- Demonstrated experience providing legal advice in areas of gray that require business judgement and risk calibration
- Strong oral and written communication skills, and experience communicating with a range of different stakeholders
