Job Purpose and Impact

The Commercial Lawyer will independently handle the commercial legal affairs for various businesses and functions with limited oversight from senior lawyers. In this role, you will provide legal advice and recommend action to leaders regarding matters of moderate to high complexity or with a sizable financial impact.

Key Accountabilities

  • Independently research, analyze and interpret proposed and existing laws, statutes and regulations.
  • Identify, evaluate and address issues of legal risk in a commercial context.
  • Independently structure, draft, negotiate and approve legal agreements, written communications and other documents related to a variety of trade, commercial, financial and operational matters.
  • Gather relevant facts and information from multiple sources using probing questions and methods and apply the results to research legal principles and precedents.
  • Provide practical solutions and advice to business and function leaders.
  • Engagement, oversight and cost management of outside counsel.
  • Provide expert thought leadership in your field and work with limited direction, using additional research and interpretation to identify issues or problems. You may provide direction to supporting team members and be a strategic contributor.
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Juris doctor and licensed to practice law in current jurisdiction with an ability and willingness to be licensed in Minnesota
  • Ability to build trusting and collaborative relationships and proactively address conflict
  • Ability to problem solve using a creative, resilient and agile approach
  • Excellent communication, advocacy, writing and drafting skills
  • Minimum of four years of related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven commitment to community service including pro bono work
  • Experience in bio-industrial, chemical or other related industry
