Strategy and Business Development Director
JOB PURPOSE AND IMPACT
The Strategy and Business Development Director will help to execute and accelerate growth plans for Cargill Animal Protein China (CAPC). CAPC is a part of the Cargill Protein Asia & Europe Group (CPAE) and consists of an integrated poultry processing and further processing operations, and other animal protein processing, and alternative protein manufacturing assets servicing high growth customers in the food service and retail markets. CPAE has operations in eight countries across Asia and Europe and exports to more than 30 countries globally.
The role will work closely with the Managing Director and Senior Leadership Team (“SLT”) members of CAPC as well as the Group Strategy Leader of CPAE. The role will work to create and execute various organic and inorganic strategies to accelerate the growth of Cargill’s protein business in China. The role will have a direct reporting line to the Managing Director, a dotted line reporting to the CPAE Group Strategy Lead and be part of the CAPC SLT. This will ensure that enterprise, group and country strategies are closely aligned. The role requires a good understanding of consumer trends and competitive landscape in China and an ability to think critically to promote growth and ensure the long-term growth and success of CAPC. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a high degree of ownership, willingness to roll up their sleeves and focus on delivering results.
Develop and Execute Strategy – work closely with the Managing Director, SLT and Group Strategy Lead to develop and execute a strategy that profitably grows the size of CAPC. This includes taking ownership of and leading the execution of various strategic projects. This requires interpreting the short- and long-term trends in protein consumption in China and monitoring the developments of competitors in the market. Act as an independent thought partner to the Managing Director and SLT and influence others without direct authority. Support the Managing Director in developing and maintaining relationships with key partners and industry participants in China. Ability to identify, monitor and develop relationships with potential acquisition targets together with the Managing Director and SLT. Support the evaluation, acquisition and integration of targets.
Lead and manage teams – work together with the SLT and broader CAPC team, organize and manage teams, clarify expectations, and help to promote and develop strategic thinking across the team. Role will need to ensure completed work meets expectations. This requires working with timelines, challenges, and learnings to ensure projects deliver on promises (scope, timeline, budget). Work closely with the Group Strategy Lead to ensure alignment with Group and Enterprise strategy. Take ownership of portfolio of projects, own data management and provide effectively written and verbal communications to the Group.
Strategy portfolio and alignment – work effectively across a cross functional and matrixed enterprise to understand global priorities and translate those priorities to our business in China. Drive growth across seafood, alternative protein and beef. This includes maintaining close relationships with global teams to align and drive the success of Cargill’s overall protein business in China. Successfully manage competing priorities to deliver a portfolio of strategic initiatives across multiple protein types.
Cross Cargill collaboration – work collaboratively with other business and functional partners across Cargill. This could include business partners in Cargill’s Animal Health and Nutrition division or functional partners in Corporate Strategy and Development, for example.
Minimum Required Qualifications
•Education of Master’s degree in business / Bachelor degree with commensurate experience
•Experience of 7+ years with proven track record of success in teams
•Business skills for successful business growth, portfolio and project management, and delivering financial impact
•Leadership skills with senior leaders, stakeholder management, project teams. Willingness to listen and develop talent
•Competency in developing strategy, developing business, analytical skills, lead change, interpersonal skills (verbal, listening, working with others), and entrepreneurial approach (sense-of-urgency, results orientated)
•Travel across China to review opportunities up to 25%
•Fluency in English and Mandarin
•Education of Master of Business Administration (MBA)
•Experience in animal protein, a complex multinational business, or food production
•Business skills with investment banking, strategy execution, corporate/business development
•Leadership inexecuting projects and working effectively in teams
•Fluency in a second language
•Based ideally in China currently
