Job Purpose and Impact

In  support of our growing amount of innovation activities we are looking to hire a Senior Scientist Edible Oils and Fats, who will provide technical expertise and collect scientific data to support the project teams to develop an in depth scientific intelligence and related intelligence protection strategy. In this role, you will collaborate with cross functional teams to identify new inventions and translate these into new intellectual property.

As Senior Scientist Edible Oils and Fats you will be part of the R&D organisation, embedded within Product and Process Development (PPD) team. The PPD team develops innovative Edible Oils and Fats products and processes.  The team covers the development of new oils & fats solutions from concept at lab scale through pilot plant scale up until conceptual design of full scale production processes. It has a strong knowledge base, that is used to translate scientific concepts into practical approaches for successful customer solutions.

Locations: Botlek, Schiphol in Netherlands and Vilvoorde, Izegem in Belgium

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct scientific interpretation of patent, literature research and internal reports to enable teams to develop an in depth scientific intelligence and related intelligence protection strategy.
  • Estimate the impact of relevant patent documents on possibilities for future product development, on competitive position and on the business plans of the categories.
  • Conduct analysis to identify competitive technology and competitor benchmarking(e.g. freedom to operate assessments).
  • Set up and coordinate experiments to collect scientific data and participate in carrying out new, nonroutine experiments as needed.
  • Maintain the database of patents(content and processes) and communicate to teams in the business.
  • Contribute to category intellectual capital value capture sessions.
  • Work with cross-functional teams (law team, Information search specialists, technical service, application team, operations, food safety quality and regulatory, etc.).
  • Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience

Proven knowledge of chemistry, processes and analytical techniques related to oils and fats.

Basic knowledge of intellectual property rights

Minimum of four years of related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or other post-secondary degree

5+ years of related work experience in R&D environment

Possess comprehensive knowledge on the use of oils and fats in applications such as chocolate, confectionary, bakery, dairy, infant nutrition.

Tech-savvy and comfortable with evolving business-critical technology

Strategic thinker with ability to build effective plans to support strategic initiatives

Ability to make sense of complex, high-quantity, and sometimes contradictory, information to effectively solve problems.

Ability to build collaborative relationships with cross-functional teams.
