Position Purpose & Summary

We have an opportunity for a Team Leader/Area Superintendent in our Starch plant in Hammond, Indiana just 15 minutes outside of Chicago. This position has over all management responsibilities of operations in the starch operational areas.  This includes production, safety, environmental, costs, management, customers and quality.
The Starch Team Leader/Area Superintendent is responsible for managing a team of approximately 26 Operators and 5 exempt employees to safely and efficiently operate food starch product lines including flash dried modified starches, cold water swellable (Preg-Gel) starches and Dextrins to comply with all government regulations and corporate guidelines.  The Starch Team Leader/Area Superintendent will establish a safe, results oriented culture that includes clear performance expectations and measures with a strong emphasis on accountability and development.  This position is also responsible for operational oversight, regulatory compliance and maintenance on High Hazard Processes (HHP’s) including Propylene Oxide, Anhydrous HCl and combustible dust.  While actively engaging all employees in contributing to the success of the business, this position will manage the department budget and oversee the entire process.

Principal Accountabilities

30% -Development and supervision of direct and indirect reports (coaching, PMP's) Work with peers at location in establishing consistent personnel policies.  Peer with other facilities to establish consistent plant practices. 
Lead department/area in a manner that leads to engaged employees.
25% - Oversee product quality to ensure total customer satisfaction.  Interface with customers on plant visits and audits.
25%- Develop strategies for operations of assigned area to include technical optimization of processes.  This involves working with applicable BU Manufacturing Technology Engineering Team. 
15% -Establish, implement and maintain area capital and operating budgets.
5% - Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline OR 15 years of operational experience with demonstrated career progression
  • 7 years  technical experience in engineering, production, or operations
  • 5 years production management and supervisory experience
  • Working  knowledge of Food Safety, OSHA, and Environmental regulations
  • Technical knowledge and experience with process unit operations
  • Demonstrated team building, leadership and conflict resolution skills.  Knowledgeable of basic HR practices, EEO, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written, verbal, presentation skills) at multiple levels of Cargill and customer organizations 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical knowledge and experience with process unit operations preferably in Food starch and/or food ingredient processing
  • Project facilitation experience
  • HHP experience (PSM, PHA, LOPA, etc)
  • Lean manufacturing methodology and six sigma knowledge
